All the (Not-So-Good) Things That Happen When You Refuse to Take Yourself Seriously

All the (Not-So-Good) Things That Happen When You Refuse to Take Yourself SeriouslyAll the (Not-So-Good) Things That Happen When You Refuse to Take Yourself SeriouslyWhen is the last time you had an opinion but didnt share it with anyone because you didnt think anyone would care? When is the last time you got really excited about an idea you had but then never pursued it because you decided it wasnt good enough? When is the last time you started to make something but gave up before you finished because you didnt think anyone would like it?Youll read a lot of articles that tell you to Just do it- dont worry what others will think, keep going, keep persevering, dont give upBut if you dont take yourself seriously, youll never be able to take any of that advice. Because youll always be able to convince yourself that what youre doing isnt important enough.I didnt take myself seriously for a long time. I still struggle with taking myself seriously. I couldnt even put a finger on what it wa s I was doing to myself until about a year ago. But finally I realized theres this thing some people have- this ability to get excited about something theyre doing and go for it with some sort of crazy abandon. This ability to remain focused and stand firm and get on top of a mountain and shout out what they want for all to hear (so to speak).And I knew I had the ability to climb up a mountain and do the same thing, but I would always talk myself out of it. And I finally realized it was because I just didnt take myself seriously.I even struggled writing this article.Why am I writing this? This is stupid. This is repetitive. Hasnt someone else said this before but better? Do I even know what Im trying to say? No one is going to read this. I should go work on something else. This is a waste of time.Those were my thoughts almost every time I tried to create something new. I didnt take my own opinions, my ideas, or even what I wanted for my life seriously.So, What Happens When You Dont Take Yourself Seriously?You spend a lot of time dreaming but leid actually doing. You come up with ideas but you stop yourself before you even try.Or you do try something but you give up quickly because you decide its not good enough, no one will like it, and it was a stupid idea anyway.But the worst part happens 10 years later when you look back on that thing you almost started and you realize there was something there. It wasnt half as bad as what you thought at the time and you might have really accomplished something if youd only stuck with it.What Happens When You Dont Take Yourself Seriously?You end up living a life you arent all that proud of. You keep waiting to do that thing that youre passionate about, you keep waiting to do that thing thats going to make you feel successful. You fill up your time with a bunch of things you think you have to do, but nothing you really want to do. You work hard and you do a good job but you also feel trapped inside yourself, putting on a sh ow that someone else is directing.What Happens When You Dont Take Yourself Seriously?Youll eventually see someone else who had the same idea you had, but she shared it with the world, she did something with it.But it was the exact same idea you say. Yes, it was- but that person took it seriously. That person took herself seriously. That person said, This is interesting to me, so it could be interesting to someone else, and they did something with it.What Happens When You Dont Take Yourself Seriously?You resent people who do. You look at people who promote themselves and their ideas and you think theyre egotistical or ridiculous. Or you look at people who you admire and you lament the fact that you could never ever accomplish what they have.What Happens When You Dont Take Yourself Seriously?You sabotage yourself. You rush through a half-hearted execution and dont give yourself the time you need to learn something new, or do it the right way. And what happens? It doesnt turn out the w ay you wanted and then, boom Youve proven yourself right- it was a total waste of time. But you might have had a totally different outcome if youd first accepted the fact that it might take time but that the time would be worth it because you believed in it.What Happens When You Dont Take Yourself Seriously?You get depressed. You get angry with yourself. You get disappointed in yourself. You wonder why you havent done anything. You feel like you never will. You feel like its too late. But its not.Every piece of every tiny little thing youve ever thought is filled with possibilities. You dont know what. And thats scary. You might not yet know how. And thats hard. But when you take yourself seriously, you give yourself enough credit to know that you can figure it out. When you know in your heart that you and your ideas are important, you will give every idea you have a fighting chance.That might mean speaking up at work. Or it might mean just finishing that one thing youve been thinki ng about forever. Or it might mean tweeting about it, making a video or blog post about it, or getting on a stage and sharing it with an audience.When you take yourself seriously you will make others take you seriously. You will put your ideas out there. You wont hide them. You wont delete them. You will keep trying.Take Yourself SeriouslyDont treat your ideas like theyre nothing, dont treat yourself like youre nothing, because you and your ideas are important and meaningful and have the potenzial to become so much more than you realize.Trust me. Make sure that you notify a current employee that an employment verification letter has been requested and by whom to make sure that the employee is authorizing the disclosure. This practice is recommended, as a courtesy to the current employee, even when his or her signature is on the form that requests and authorizes the employment verification letter. You will want your communication with external organizations transparent to the employee. For example, an employee may be waiting stressfully to learn whether he is eligible for a bank loan. Letting him know that you are responding to the banks request for information is transparent communication that will relieve his stress. Disclosure of Informat ion About a Former Employee If the employment verification request asks for information about a former employee, make sure that you have a signed release of information on file. You would have obtained this release when you met with an exiting employee to review the employment ending checklist. Or, the request for employment verification must contain the former employees signature authorizing the request. You should check the signature against signatures you have in the employee file. Sample Employment Verification Letter Dear Madam / Sir The purpose of this letter is to verify the employment of the named employee. This former workaholic has tips for getting back your sanity

This former workaholic has tips for getting back your sanity This former workaholic has tips for getting back your sanity Can’t stop answering emails after work? Do you pride yourself as being the last one to leave the office, even though there’s nothing to do? No boundaries between home and the office? Want to stop the madness? #chill: Turn Off Your Job and Turn On Your Life, is a new book by Dr. Brian E. Robinson that focuses on short bursts of meditation and lessons in mindfulness to stop the cycle of overwork.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Robinson, a licensed psychotherapist with a practice in Asheville, NC, is a recovering workaholic that has written extensively about work addiction. His book, however,   is for everybody - useful for anyone from a go-go perfectionist overachiever to the tech-obsessed soul who wants to learn how to unplug after work and focus on work-life balance.He spoke with Ladders about his book:Ladders: Your book is aimed at workaholics but I read it, and it s eems like it could be for anyone, especially today that we have this modern, very highly technologically-connected workforce that has trouble shutting off at the end of the day.Robinson: Actually, I wrote it for everybody.I spent a lot of time writing and researching this whole idea of work-addiction and workaholism and I’ve written other books and articles about it. This book is for workaholics, but it’s for anyone on the continuum â€" the workaholic might be the most extreme. People are picking it up and saying, “Gosh, I’m not a workaholic but this certainly helps me,” because I think many of us, if not most of us, are struggling with the blurred lines because of the technology and the pressures that people are feeling they’re under, some of which we put ourselves under.My goal was to extend it to everybody … It can be a stay-at-home mom or stay-at-home dad. It can be someone who’s fully employed. It can be a volunteer and even a retiree.So the book is really about being able to be mindful and pay attention and slow down a little bit, so we can live longer and live happier.Ladders: You wrote about your experience as a workaholic. What kind of work were you doing then?Robinson: I was at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte… I went through the professorial ranks and that’s when I was in the throes of my own work addictions before I even had a private practice.I was teaching counseling in the Department of Counseling, Special Ed and Child Development. I was just so immersed in it. I had no clue. You know, when we’re in the water, sometimes we don’t see the water we’re swimming in.Ladders: What drives workaholism or things that can turn you on to workaholism?Robinson: Well, a true dyed-in-the-wool workaholic is not unlike an alcoholic, actually. The trajectory of the addiction is very similar and, in my own situation, there was a time when I would hide my work because my family would complain, just like an alcoholic hides a bot tle.I was working day, night, weekends, holidays, just working all the time. What I realized, in my own recovery, is that it gave me this high. And what a lot of workaholics do, it helps them assuage anxiety.A lot of it has to do with control of dealing with uncertainty and unpredictability. And then it becomes a medication. It’s used to hold that anxiety at bay when the fear of the unknown or not knowing what’s gonna happen.That profile doesn’t fit everybody, but many of the people who are not workaholics are often dealing with perfectionism or that little voice in their head that says, “You have to. You must.”Ladders: What is a chilled life or a chilled worker? And how do you get there?The way I define it is someone who is “drawn” versus “driven.” What I just described to you was my being driven from either an internal source like the voice in my head that says, “You’ve gotta be in control. Something terrible’s gonna happen if you’re not,” or on the out side, where you have deadlines or you have a big business or a boss who’s standing over you saying, “You’ve gotta get this done.”Even if it’s not there, sometimes we bring that to the work. Even if you’re not a workaholic, some people experience their boss or their supervisor as a parent and that results in a replay of what happened in their own childhoods. So that’s “driven.”Now “drawn” is the opposite. It’s inside-out instead of outside-in. And so a chilled worker would be someone who is able to come from their own internal peace and that takes some work to get there. It’s people who â€" they don’t just speed through. They’re also aware. They’re mindful, I guess is the best way to say it. They’re mindfully present of the people around them and what’s going on inside of them and they’re able to regulate internally how they respond to either that inner voice or that external pressure, instead of allowing themselves to cave into it.Viktor Frankl wrote the book “Man’s Search For Meaning” about his experience at Auschwitz and, basically, the book says the reason he survived is because the Nazis could not take his will.What a quote from it says is, “Between the trigger or the stimulus and you’re reaction to it, there is a space.” And once you find that space, you’re able to be there more. In that space, he says, you have a choice, and when you’re choosing how you respond to a situation instead of just automatically reacting, you’re free.[That space] could be anything … I know that’s a long answer, but… A chilled worker is someone who’s able to stay in that sweet spot, that chill spot.Ladders: I wanted to ask you about open-awareness meditation, one easy form of meditation you mentioned in the book. So why does that help us?Robinson: The more you do it, the more you build that space. It brings you into the present moment. It actually, on a neurological level, puts you in your, what we call the parasymp athetic nervous system, which is the opposite of the sympathetic. The sympathetic is your fight or flight. That’s where fear and anger and reactivity is and, over time, basically, you’re training the brain. I don’t have to react just because something happens that I don’t like. I’m able to stay calm and deal with it from my â€" we call it the new brain instead of the lizard brain.You’ll notice people who meditate regularly will say, “Gosh, I don’t have those hot buttons anymore. I’m able to respond more rationally when something upsets me.”Ladders: It seems like they’re something you can do even in the middle of the workday at your desk?Robinson: Oh yeah, and I recommend five minutes. When I mention meditation to my clients or when I’m speaking, people throw their hands up, “I can’t do another thing. Don’t even go there.” And I say, “Hold on. I’m talking five minutes.” Because when people hear meditation, they think of the 70s. And they just imm ediately write it off.So I say, “This is portable, it’s free. It will change your life.” Five minutes a day. If you want to do more, fine. And that’s what I do. I do five minutes a day and I sit and do one of the meditations in the book, and just focus on my breath. In through my nose, out through my mouth.And over time, it regulates your reactivity and it helps you be in that chill spot more. Five minutes is doable between sunrise and sunset.Ladders: Going from workaholism to wherever you are on the continuum, what does a better, more chill version of ourselves look like overall?Robinson: There are eight C words and when you’re in that place, of course, the whole idea of that chill spot is there’s a sense of calm. There’s a sense of clarity. There’s connection â€" more connection with yourself and with people. There’s a greater sense of confidence and courage â€" courage meaning you’re more willing to stick your neck out, not in dangerous ways but maybe do thing s you wouldn’t have ordinarily done and you grow from it. So that’s what courage is.And then there’s creativity. The creativity gets unleashed when we’re calmer. Most people who are creatives, and certainly writers, will often say, and this is true of me, my creative ideas come not when I’m struggling and trying to make them come, but when I’m in the shower or moving furniture. Because you’re more relaxed and you’re not forcing. So the creativity emerges. And compassion. Self- compassion as well as compassion for others.So that’s a chilled worker but it’s also just someone, even if they don’t have a job in the workplace, as a mom or a dad, a chilled parent. Or a chilled retiree.And one of the things I say in the book is, if we can be a little more forgiving of ourselves and other people, again that helps you immerse in that place, the sweet spot, the chill spot.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Top 3 Phone Interview Fails {+ What To Do Instead}

Top 3 Phone Interview Fails {+ What To Do Instead} Top 3 Phone Interview Fails {+ What To Do Instead} “I’m moving from consulting to seeking work for a regular employer full-time. I’m also considering relocation from the East Coast to the West Coast. I have found it hard to hear back from anybody when I apply to jobs, but luckily I have a phone interview on Monday. I don’t want to blow it. What should my best approach be?” It would be a beautiful day in the neighborhood every day of the week if your job search were a smooth path from the 1st application to “you’re hired.” But nearly every candidate faces some roadblocks: ageism, no degree, resume gap, or, like the candidate above, relocation. Overcoming these things to get a call back is only step 1. Let’s talk about step 2: the phone interview, and how to avoid the top 3 fails so you can build momentum from here. Phone Interview Fail #1: You Were Busy {But You Pretended Not To Be} Job search mode is the only time you race to answer every call that comes in. Eagerness is natural. After all, getting that response is the goal, right? But don’t make the big blunder of answering a number you don’t recognize when you’re in the middle of doing something else, just because you’re hoping a decision maker is on the other end. Think about it: you’re out to an early dinner. The phone rings. You answer and you’re in a noisy area. You may need to ask the person to speak up. Then you need to take the time to walk to a quiet area. {Guess what? It’s never as quiet as you hoped it would be.} In the bathroom, someone’s flushing the toilet. In the lobby, the door’s opening and closing all the time. On the sidewalk, everyone’s car is driving by. While all that’s happening, you barely remember what version of the resume you sent to this particular employer. You certainly don’t have it in front of you. You can’t recall the notes you took down when you researched the company. In short, whatever you manage to piece together and say is going to be disjointed, haphazard, and not the presentation of yourself that you envisioned giving the decision maker. Answer, Then Decline   If you can clamp down on your need to answer every call in the 1st place, just do so. Check your voice mails when you get to them. But if you do pick up and find the recruiter speaking to you, express gratitude, politeness, and then excuse yourself. Here’s what that can sound like: “Oh! I’m so glad you called. Listen, I’m walking into another meeting at this precise moment. I need to return your call. Will tomorrow at 10 work on your end?”   Case closed. Just because a recruiter wants to speak to you that very second doesn’t mean you have to drop everything and do so, particularly when it’s inconvenient for you. You’re allowed to not participate in the exchange right then and there. The opportunity is not going to get sucked away between now and 10 am tomorrow. Call them back at the appointed time when you have your resume and your notes in front of you, so you can present yourself like the professional you are. Phone Interview Fail #2: You Made The Priorities Yours Not Theirs A job search meme circulating the Internet says, “Why should we hire you?” And the candidate’s response, “Because you need help and I can do it, so…” Honest. Obvious. Funny. And it highlights our 1st instinct towards the gut answer, even though in virtually all job search scenarios, you’re supposed to go with the answer that serves THEM, not you. It’s like a 1st date. If you don’t show any interest in the other person, the other person’s not going to be particularly interested in seeing you again. The person who posed the question at the top of this post is looking to relocate. But the phone interview is not the moment to ask about relocation benefits. That may be in your gut, and it’s definitely YOUR priority. But first, demonstrate that you can do the job â€" that’s a lot closer to what the employer needs to hear, without becoming immediately concerned about geography. Serve Others First Do your homework beforehand. Please do not call up the “about us” and “company history” pages, where all the language you think is unique to put in your cover letter actually goes to die. Demonstrate what you know about the organization by tuning in to social media and Google News, so you can understand what the company’s working on right now â€" weave that into your phone interview conversation. Phone Interview Fail #3: On the Phone Does Not Equal On the Fly You know what they say about 1st impressions right? This is your golden opportunity to make a good one. You have so many more things under your control at a phone interview than an in-person interview, so take advantage of this! Spread out in your home office or dining room, where you have a big table. Have your resume in front of you. Have the job description in front of you. Literally, physically draw big red arrows pointing from the top 3 qualifications in the ad to the corresponding points in your resume. Pre-package your answers to, Tell me about yourself, What's your greatest strength? and What's your greatest weakness. These are the questions you're virtually guaranteed will come up. Make bullet points or write them on 35 cards. Similarly, have the questions ready that you want to ask. Keep this all right there at arms length so you can get to it easily. Making it to the interview doesn't have to be so hard. And making your interview shine needs to be your next objective. Find out exactly how successful candidates go from phone interview, to in-person interview, to offer, week in and week out. That's in our free job search training right here.

An incredible 1 in 7 Americans thinks men shouldnt take time off for a baby

An incredible 1 in 7 Americans thinks men shouldn't take time off for a baby An incredible 1 in 7 Americans thinks men shouldn't take time off for a baby Maybe this is why parental leave policies in the U.S. are so far behind: many Americans think that new babies should be the sole responsibility of the mother.About one in seven Americans say men shouldn’t be able to take any paternity leave, paid or unpaid, according to a new Pew Research Center study.For comparison, more Americans are supportive of women taking maternity leave- only 3% say women shouldn’t take any leave.This number is tied to the  belief that more Americans think women are better caregivers. Although 71% of Americans know that it’s important for babies to bond with both parents, 53% believe women do a better job at caregiving for babies than men.It’s older men who are most resistant to the idea of paternity leave. Around 36% of men who are ages 65 and older believe men shouldn’t take paternity leave, while only 10% of men ages 30 to 49 believe this.Political views play a role, too. The more liberal you believe yourself to be, the more likely you were to su pport paternity leave, researchers found. Around 26% of conservative Republicans and 13% of liberal Republicans did not believe in paternity leave, compared to 9% of liberal Democrats and 11% of conservative Democrats.For the parents who would actually take parental leave, the Pew Research Center study found that in the last two years, the average time of leave was longer for women than men. Men would only take an average of one week of leave, while women would take an average of 11  weeks.The U.S. currently does not federally mandate any paid family leave, but paid parental leave has been shown to increase employee retention, and to keep more women in the workforce. Fathers who took two or more weeks of leave  were found to be more involved in the daily upbringing of their child’s life later on.

Doty, MD“My co-worker gave this book to me last Christmas, during an extremely stressful time in my life. It really cemented my belief in meditation as a necessary practice in my life. I, like many, get tunnel-vision under duress, so this book helped me to be more aware of my surroundings and to keep my mind, eyes and heart open.”- Estelle Atney, accountant, Playa del Rey, CAThe Power of Habit  by Charles Duhigg“This book helped me with my personal goals to build a new business and run my first-ever NYC Marathon this year. It helped me unlock what assumptions and habits I held in order to explore more creative solutions. Similarly, though I have been a lifelong runner, I struggled to trainer harder and reading the book challenged me to explore new courses and cues outside my usual routines.”- Nekpen Osuan, data scientist, New York, NYQuiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking  by Susan Cain“This book changed my life. It made me reali ze that not only was there nothing wrong with the girl who doesn’t want to compete for airtime at brunch, but that there’s actual  power  in that. That the quiet, thoughtful, reflective, analytical nature that I’ve thought was a defect in some way is a true strength that not everyone has.”- Sharon Podobnik Peterson, leadership coach, business owner, Washington, DCThe Big Leap  by Gay Hendricks“This book helped me see some of the reasons why I was holding myself down and not allowing myself to grow. It gave me the push to step up and grow into what I am capable of, and work toward what I want to be, do and have.”- Herdis Pala, HR leader and speaker, Reykjavik, IcelandMan’s Search for Meaning  by Victor Frankel“Frankel’s account of how he emotionally survived being in a concentration camp taught me that we have the ability to create new narratives for ourselves that can help us live through the most devastating circumstances, moment by moment. We can find beauty in whatever speaks most deeply to us â€" a sunset, a kind gesture, a loving word â€" and focus on that rather than on the pain that could break our spirit.”- Mark Chimsky, editorial consultant, Portland, MELove Warrior  by Glennon Doyle“I read a lot of self-help books, so a memoir was out of the norm and I expected as a light vacation read. I was surprised at how affected I was by the writing. As an introvert who processes things internally and tends not to share my truth with others, I found Doyle’s raw truths to be rare and refreshing. More than once, her stories led me to cry while sitting and reading on my kitchen floor. It gave me a new perspective on how to tell my truth, and to articulate my authentic self in the world. This is something that I have actively tried to strengthen in my personal life and professionally as an entrepreneur. This book is now on the greatest hits shelf in my office.”- Katie Rasoul, leadership coach, Milwaukee, WIRising Strong by  Brene Brownâ €œThis book has absolutely been instrumental in helping me better understand and tame the stories I tend to tell myself about uncomfortable situations/comments or events. The book helped me see that with mindfulness, we have the opportunity to challenge our thoughts and to finally own our story and rewrite it to reflect the truth, as opposed to self-harming assumptions.”- April McGinnis, operations administrator, Brownsburg, INThe Remains of the Day  by Kazuo Ishiguro“This book made me realize just how much our views of our own past â€" and the stories we tell about our lives â€" can change over time. And if we can make new and better sense of our pasts, we have a better chance to make futures in which we’re happier and better versions of ourselves.”- Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, author and futurist, Menlo Park CAFailing Forward  by John Maxwell“As a recovering perfectionist, this book helped me overcome a fear of failure. It shifted my perspective of failure. Now I fully unde rstand that failure is a necessary process of success, which has opened up new opportunities in my life.”- Erin Urban, career coach, Houston, TXLight is the New Black  by Rebecca Campbell“I stayed in reading this book on New Year’s Eve 2015 with a glass of Prosecco. It was a year after quitting my job as a lawyer and I found myself a little lost again. Each word resonated with me at a soul level. I was right in allowing the world and person I’d created to crumble around me. I could create a more authentic and truer version of myself and that would reflect in the work I did. It was the start of everything falling into place for me, it made me feel supported and is a book I recommend to so many people.”- Lulu Minns, business coach, UKThe Charisma Myth  by Olivia Fox Cabane“This book helped me gain self-confidence and made me feel empowered. It challenges the idea of charisma as an innate characteristic and depicts it as a skill that can be learned, practiced, and mastere d. Immediately, this way of thinking shook fixed ideas I had about achievement and charisma. I became more powerful and influential thanks to this it and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to thrive socially, academically, and professionally.”â€" Jaimi Jansen, entrepreneur, Santa Cruz, CAThis article first appeared on Thrive.

10 unmistakable habits of utterly authentic people

10 unmistakable habits of utterly authentic people 10 unmistakable habits of utterly authentic people Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” Wilde made it sound so simple, but living with authenticity is a real challenge.To live authentically, you must own your actions and ensure that they align with your beliefs and needs. This can be a difficult thing to maintain when external forces pressure you to do something you’re not comfortable with or to be someone you’re not.Most people have experienced the discomfort that comes with failing to behave authentically. Researchers from Harvard, Columbia, and Northwestern joined forces to measure this phenomenon scientifically. They found that when people failed to behave authentically, they experienced a heightened state of discomfort that’s usually associated with immorality. People who weren’t true to themselves were so distraught that they felt a strong desire to cleanse themselves physically.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Sati sfaction, Neuroscience, and more!It’s clear that our brains know when we’re living a lie, and like all lies, being inauthentic causes nothing but harm. But how do you start living authentically? That can be tough, especially if you’ve been playing a role for most of your adult life.“I had no idea that being your authentic self could make me as rich as I’ve become. If I had, I’d have done it a lot earlier.” â€" Oprah WinfreyAuthentic people are deeply in tune with who they are and what they want. Their ability to live their life in harmony with their true selves comes from some clearly discernible habits that any of us can study and incorporate into our repertoire.They help others to be their authentic selvesAuthentic people don’t expect others to play a role either. They don’t make people feel as though they have to fit into a certain mold or to project a certain image to be a part of their lives. Their commitment to being authentic gives other people the freedom t o live authentically too.They let go of negative peopleAuthentic people have too much self-respect to put up with people who treat them badly or have ill will toward them, and they have too much respect for other people to try to change them. So they let go - not out of anger, but out of their need to be true to themselves.They express their true feelings and opinions, even when they’re not popularAuthentic people don’t live a go-along-to-get-along lifestyle. They’re simply not capable of acting in a way that’s contrary to what their principles dictate, even if there are repercussions. They prefer not to lie to other people, and they especially can’t lie to themselves. This means that they’re willing to live with the repercussions of staying true to themselves.They are confidentMuch social anxiety stems from the fear we have of being “found out.” We’re afraid that somebody is going to discover that we’re not as smart, experienced, or well-connected as we pretend to be. Authentic people don’t have that fear. Their confidence comes from the fact that they have nothing to hide. Who they appear to be is who they really are.They prefer deep conversations to meaningless chatterEleanor Roosevelt nailed this one. She once said, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” You won’t find authentic people gossiping about others or giving their opinions on the latest celebrity scandals. They know all of that stuff is nothing more than cultural trappings, and they choose to talk about things that matter.They don’t take anyone’s advice without evaluating it carefully firstIt’s not that authentic people aren’t willing to take advice; they are. But they don’t put that advice into action just because other people have. First, they’ll run it through the wringer from a critical perspective so that they can be sure it makes sense for them.They don’t complain about their problemsComplaining is wh at you do when you think that the situation you’re in is someone else’s fault or that it’s someone else’s job to fix it. Authentic people, on the other hand, are accountable. They understand that they - and no one else - are responsible for their own lives, so there’s no point in complaining.They’re internally motivatedAuthentic people don’t sit at their desks thinking, “Well, if my boss would just make this job worthwhile, I’d do a better job.” The carrot-and-stick approach just isn’t relevant to them. They’re motivated from within.They make the best out of any situationAuthentic people have a very firm grasp on reality. When things don’t go their way, they don’t get trapped in denial, and they don’t sit around whining about how things should be different. They simply take stock of the way things are and, if there’s nothing they can do to change the situation, they figure out a way to make the best of it.They don’t get stressed or upset when some one doesn’t like themIt’s never fun accepting that someone doesn’t like you, but a lot of times that discomfort comes from trying to figure out what you did wrong or how you can fix it. Authentic people don’t have that anxiety because they would never try to change themselves to influence someone else’s opinion. They accept that other people have a right to be authentic about their own feelings, even if those feelings are negative toward them.Bringing it all togetherLiving authentically is a perpetual challenge that yields great rewards. First, they’ll run it through the wringer from a critical perspective so that they can be sure it makes sense for them.They don’t complain about their problemsComplaining is what you do when you think that the situation you’re in is someone else’s fault or that it’s someone else’s job to fix it. They simply take stock of the way things are and, if there’s nothing they can do to change the situation, they figure out a way to make the best of it.They don’t get stressed or upset when someone doesn’t like themIt’s never fun accepting that someone doesn’t like you, but a lot of times that discomfort comes from trying to figure out what you did wrong or how you can fix it. It’s a noble path that you won’t regret following.What are the benefits of living authentically? How ModelBased Engineering Cuts Waste

How ModelBased Engineering Cuts Waste How ModelBased Engineering Cuts Waste How Model-Based Engineering Cuts Waste Just as computer-aided design (CAD) evolved over time and changed how engineers go about their work, so will the transformation from 2D, paper-based manufacturing processes to a 3D model-based engineering (MBE)collaborative environment. The concept is that there will be only one electronic 3D CAD file with all information included, eliminating the need to maintain and update separate files, to translate drawings between 2D and 3D and to provide other separate information and materials in a format that manufacturers and others currently require. Most, if not all, of the work that has been needed to translate design requirements into manufacturing features and operations will be done once and shared in a collaborative environment. Although discussed for some years but still in the early stages, like the adoption of CAD, MBE is expected to cut significant waste and re-work out of a project as well as reduce errors and omissions. Much of the overhead of design changes is in tedious paper pushing and database management of linked files, experts say. MBE is also often used as the acronym for model-based environment, of which model-based engineering is an important component. This next stage of evolution is getting an extra push from the 3D printing field that is producing things faster as well as because traditional manufacturing processes are also getting much faster, says Jesse Darley, director of mechanical engineering for Design Concepts, a Madison, WI-based product design and innovation consultancy. For example, some companies are offering machining services much faster than ever before, producing injection molded parts within a few days and machine parts quickly too, he notes. The NASA 3D Printer in zero gravity. Image: NASA Were not quite there yet [with MBE], due to a number of factors, tradition and cost [of conversion] among them, Darley says. It is a promise of the future. Like 3D printing, MBE serves as a tool that enables rapid prototyping to speed up the design and product development process and ultimately will mean cost-savings. Among those leading the charge are the Defense Department, particularly for the military, and NASA. Research conducted by the National Institute of Standards Technology partnering with the Department of the Army and the Defense Logistics Agency, indicate that there could be a reduction in nonrecurring costs of between 50 percent and 70 percent and speed to market by as much as 50 percent faster. Whats left to happen is for industry to follow suit and start using it, Darley says. He expects early adoption will come from extremes large companies and startups. Large companies will realize the financial benefits and adapt their practices, he adds. Many startups arent invested in the old way of doing things and will find MBE attractive for cost savings and improved documentation. Many engineering and design firms are using this transition period to get up to speed. There will be a learning curve for engineers, though I dont expect that it will be too steep, says Scott Biba, senior mechanical engineer and project manager at Design Concepts. Were trying to get smart about it, to understand and be ready for the process when it happens. Biba explains the software his firm uses is always driven by its clients in order to be in sync with them. We have to be flexible. For the most part its driven by what manufacturing needs and is ready to use. For example, if a 3D model is not something the manufacturing process is able to have on the factory floor, they would print out a 2D drawing and take that with them on the factory floor and use that, he says. The change that engineers will need to get accustomed to is being able to completely document the design intent, including dimensions and tolerances, within the CAD model. For the most part, currently the dimensioning and tolerancing documentation is done during the creation of the drawing, he explains. Although some current CAD programs already provide additional capabilities, a transition to 3D modeling is likely to require the purchase and understanding of additional modules that may not yet be included in a standard CAD package, Biba says. Take a simple project, such as a basic disposable ballpoint pen that has three major sections, a cap, a plastic sleeve and the inside; there could easily be 12 files now, says Biba. When a change is requested, each file has to be changed individually and reviewed. With MBE, there would probably be four files, he said. When you have 12 files to manage, the potential for mistakes is tripled. Making a dimensional change in an MBE space should all happen with one mouse click with everything all linked and updated, he says. Manufacturers are putting computer screens on the manufacturing floor to get away from having a drawing in hand to perform tasks such as checking dimensions after something has been assembled, according to Darley. Theoretically, he says MBE is possible now, But its a big momentum that will have to stop the current process. It took a long time for people to adapt to 2D CAD from the drawing board and then to 3D CAD. This is the next evolution. Its going to filter in. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. Frugal living Is life more difficult for those of us who are frugal

Frugal living Is life more difficult for those of us who are frugal Frugal living Is life more difficult for those of us who are frugal Here’s an interesting question about frugal living: If you live a frugal life, is your life harder than the life of someone who spends a great deal more money than you? Or, is it easier?Let’s get a little bit deeper: If you’re frugal  because you have to be, rather than  because you choose to be, does that change the scenario?To this humble blogger,  life becomes  measurably easier  when living frugally.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  What does it mean to live “frugally”? Does it mean sacrificing the nicer things in life? Sometimes, but not always. Frugal people know  value  better than perhaps anyone.Value is a  measure of worth within the context of your family. Once we understand the true meaning of value and how it impacts our life, our decision-making process becomes that much more effective.For example, a frugal person may not opt for the cheapest t-shirt in the store, provided the shirt fits and feels comfortable. If another brand offers a better quality product, but at a higher price, the more expensive option might be the better buy because it will last longer.A few examples of how this works in practice: A frugal person might buy a more expensive product because it’ll last longer than a less expensive option A frugal person may choose a less expensive option when given a choice between things of relatively equal value A frugal person is not afraid to spend money on things that provide measurable value Remember,  frugal does not equal cheap.Frugal living beats many of the alternativesCompare frugal living to  those who live paycheck-to-paycheck.Naturally, worry over finances is the source of  profound stress  for many Americans. Losing a job means the dependable source of income is no longer guaranteed, jeopardizing the livelihood of the family.Frugal living, on the other hand, often implies a savings account. It means we are spending less than we are making, generally by a wide margin. It means we have money left over month-to-month.Now, compare frugal living to a  high-income earner  who treats him or herself to the nicer things in life. It’s great to  make lots of money, but high spending habits put us in a position of weakness.Spending large amounts of money creates a scenario where we  NEED  a high-income just to keep up with our lifestyle. Often, it means we can’t take a sabbatical without significantly curtailing our outward flow of cash. Or take a less stressful but low er-paying job. Our options are limited.Finally, match frugal living up with a  person with inherited wealth.It’s great to fall ass-backward into money, but what happens to that money when it’s not  earned? When money is not earned, it’s also not appreciated. It is not an accomplishment. In other words, it’s not  valued.When we don’t understand how value influences our decisions, we quickly squander our would-be advantages and replace them with self-inflicted weaknesses and incredible debt.What happens when we are frugal?Again, frugal people are not cheap. While they do very often spend less money than the average consumer, they do so because they  assess value differently. They are typically much more resourceful, and they conserve and squeeze the most out of everything that they buy.They are economical. Believing in maximum output with minimal  input, frugal people tend to be less wasteful and aware of the influence that the things they buy have on their life.Frugality is about  living smarter.Smarter with money  â€"  buy based on value, not based purely on cost. The previous example of the t-shirt illustrates a scenario where price may not necessarily equate to value. Most often, we get what we pay for. It is our job to assess how much value we truly need out of the things that we buy. It’s a balancing act, and it can take some practice to get right.Smarter with time  â€" use  Pareto’s 80/20 principle  to maximize your time spent doing…well, everything. Very often, we are most productive during a few relatively short periods of the day. Take advantage of these times by doing the things that make the biggest difference in your life.That’s right â€" don’t clean the bathtub during your productive hours. Work on your start-up business. Write an article for your blog. Apply for that job. Do that assignment that should have been done weeks ago. Whatever means the most to you and your future, do it!Smarter with skills  â€" fix your own car when possible. Replace that faucet instead of hiring a plumber. Become your very own “Mr. Fix-It” and stop paying for someone else’s labor whenever you can. You will make mistakes along the way, but that’s how we humans learn. We don’t learn a thing by  doing everything rightthe first time.When we live a frugal life……we can take a sabbatical without a second thought about finances. We have enough saved to withstand a sudden loss of our job. An emergency would likely not bankrupt us.If we begin to hate our job, we can move on to something else, even if that means earning less. In fact, we can simply  quit  on the spot if things get bad enough. Virtually anything is possible when we don’t live paycheck-to-paycheck.My dad used to tell me: “You can have  anything  you want, but not  everything“. He was right.And frugal people know this firsthand.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Survey Workers reveal their biggest complaints about meetings

Survey Workers reveal their biggest complaints about meetings Survey Workers reveal their biggest complaints about meetings New research from Accountemps shows that 66% of office workers say a meeting that “starts or ends late” is their biggest complaint about them.  But while 36% of employees say that they feel “less engaged” when meetings are held remotely, the same group says that they spend an average of 24% of their time overall in meetings.Independent research firms  polled more than 1,000 American, adult office workers “and more than 2,000 finance leaders from companies in more than 20 of the largest U.S. metropolitan areas.”Workers’ most popular meeting complaintsRespondents could pick more than one option. These are the ones that were chosen most often: “Starts or ends late:” 66% “It’s unnecessary (e.g., could’ve been handled over email):” 63% “Too much or not enough time allotted:” 57% “Attendees distracted (using a phone, checking email, doodling, etc.):” 57% “Attendees interrupt each other:” 55% “Not sticking to an agenda when one is provided:” 49% “Attendees unprepared:” 47% While employees say that an average of 25% of their “time in meetings is wasted,” those surveyed in finance said that they spend an average of 24% of their overall time in them. Those in this latter category also said that an average of 21% of their “time in meetings is wasted.”Michael Steinitz, executive director of Accountemps, commented on the research in a statement.“People complain about how much time they spend in meetings, and it’s true that not all of them are necessary. … But it’s also true that these gatherings, whether they’re held on-site or remotely, are often the most efficient way to communicate, collaborate and come to a decision. Both meeting planners and attendees can control whether or not a meeting is productive,” he said.

Heres What I Know About Listing Certifications on Resume

Here's What I Know About Listing Certifications on Resume The Number One Question You Must Ask for Listing Certifications on Resume Whether you are in possession of a long academic career with different degrees or masters, or vocational or technical courses that have resulted in professional certificates, there are several techniques to include certifications on a resume to draw the hiring manager's interest. Where that circumstance, leave the lesser certifications for different sections. There are various types of certifications which should be included on a resume based on the sort of jobseeker and the business and position that the resume is for. In that situation, you may add your latest certification to your education section. You might also, naturally, include any certifications in progress together with the anticipated completion date. For instance, if you have CPR certification and you're asking for an accounting position it is not relevant and would most likely be better left off your resume. Let's say that your latest certification isn't impressive. Although some certification can be costly there are many free ones that you're able to obtain to boost your resume. Mixing the certifications with different abilities or awards section won't earn any effect on the recruiter. If you've earned additional certifications from a college which are more relevant to the job that you want, consider a chronological format which allows you to highlight your latest training at the surface of the section. In case you have any on-line certifications or courses you took, those would normally be mentioned towards the base of your resume. Complete on-line courses in professionalism and in the basics of actuarial pr actice. The education section on your resume should also incorporate degrees you're currently pursuing and certificates needed to execute your job. For instance, if you're asking for a job for a network analyst, you don't need to list your house health-aide certification. Perhaps your employer would like you to certify or perhaps you think that it's time for a career move and you wish to explore IT certifications. Employers in a field like computer science, for example, may set a high emphasis on candidates with certifications in the latest technologies. Furthermore, it can help formalize the experience which you already have, which makes it simpler for you to advertise yourself to prospective employers. If you still don't have a lot to work with, you can begin inquiring about opportunities in your region that may lead to the type of experience you want.
